It wasn't until I came across an article on Drowned In Sound that I was even aware Independent Venue Week existed. It makes good sense, though, given that Record Store Day is now well established in the music calendar and other initiatives have been created to support small indie labels.
The inaugural event takes place between 28th January and 2nd February, across a range of venues nationwide, including a couple of my current and past regular haunts: the Jericho Tavern in Oxford and Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff.
The official ambassador has just been named as Colin Greenwood - an appropriate appointment, as Radiohead owe much to the Jericho Tavern. It's where they made their full live debut (after appearances at several parties) under original moniker On A Friday and went on to establish themselves on the local scene with several subsequent gigs.
Why, you might ask, do independent venues need help? Because they regularly come up against the sort of grade A wanker who moves into a vibrant area of a city and then immediately pesters the local council into serving long-established music venues with Statutory Nuisance Abatement Notices.
